Once, the electrical portion failed, the second one developed cracks in the lower vessel that prevented a tight seal. One of the Krups drip machines makes coffee almost as good, and soldiers on and on. I've owned two of these, and they always seem to fail just as the warranty expires. Initially, it brews great coffee, but eventually it fails.
This results in weaker coffee and use of excessive coffee to maintain the same strength.I've opened up the old one and the "processor/sensor" is a sealed unit that can not be adjusted or repaired.I'll continue to replace it as it does make great coffee. What has happened after that time is that the processor/sensor starts to shorten the "brew time", that is the time that the water boils in the lower pot to about 30 seconds. We have been using the Bodum Santos for about 5 years now and without a doubt, it makes the best home brewed coffee out there. My only complaint is that they only make "good" coffee for 2 to 3 years. A new unit will boil for 60 to 90 seconds.
When the other one broke I thought I could live without it. This is my second Bodum. No wayI like that as Ron Popiel says "set it and forget it" More importantly I can add as much coffee as I want to get desired strengh.
Makes the best coffee we have ever had. My husband and I use this coffee maker daily. After 26 years of marriage and having been through many different types of coffee makers over the years, we both agree this one is the best we have owned.
Pros: Fun to watch; no need to buy filters; I'm drinking less coffee.Cons: Hideously expensive; requires lots more coffee to get same strength and taste; sludgey grounds settle out in your coffee cup; the pot part requires hand washing because it has the heating element in it; most of the time when I snap it all apart to wash it I scatter grounds everywhere.Conclusion: I don't understand why this product exists or how we got suckered into buying it. Stick with the old-fashioned automatic drip for a fraction of the price.
